At it's most basic, the why is just a goal to make the world a better place, to touch and improve lives. Many are trying to solve problems that the modern world has through developing new technology. While there is definitely a need for that, I think the deeper need we face is to reach within, to understand and improve ourselves as people, and more, as a society.
